I’m a full-time working mum, with baby number two on the way. My overworked brain (because that’s how it feels), has a tough time remembering stuff like toilet paper, and occasionally milk and diapers. That’s why I created an easy grocery shopping list filled with all the essentials. The grocery list has worked wonderfully for us, and that’s why I’m sharing it with you too.
What does the grocery shopping list include?
The grocery shopping list includes all the basic and common items you need along with checkboxes. The items are organized by categories to make your shopping experience at the store or online easier. I found it handy that I can simply tick off the items I need without having to waste time writing “bread” for example. There are also blank spaces in each category to jot down any additional item that is not included there. Here are the categories:
- Fresh vegetables
- Fresh fruits
- Condiments/ Sauces
- Dairy/ Fridge
- Meat/ Sea Food
- Canned foods
- Baby items
- Frozen food
- Cleaning products
- Other stuff
What are the benefits of a grocery shopping list?
There are lots of benefits to having a grocery shopping list. Here are a few:
1. Saving time
Between kids’ activities, household responsibilities, and for many, the demands of a stressful workplace, time is the one thing that we are all lacking. That’s why a meal plan along with a comprehensive grocery shopping list can be a time-saving tool. Since the items are sorted by category, you won’t find yourself skipping back and forth across the store. You go to produce and check off all your produce items, then you move to the pantry section and cross those items off, and so on. This way, you can be in and out of the store in no time. Same for shopping online.
2. Stick to the budget
When you have a clear and concise grocery list, it’s easy to stick to your budget. You will less likely be tempted to pick items you don’t need and that don’t really help you cook a good meal for your family.
3. Meal planning
Grocery lists make meal planning and preparation much easier. You will not forget an important ingredient you need for a recipe when you have a concise grocery list.
4. Fewer trips
With a grocery list, you can get every item you need in one shot instead of getting home only to realize you forgot something you absolutely needed. Save yourself additional trips to the supermarket (or to the grocery websites in my case) and use the grocery list before you go shopping.
How to use the grocery store list?
Print out the grocery list checklist at the first of the week and tape it to your refrigerator. Throughout the week, this list will serve as a safe location to tick off the groceries you need to buy. If an item is not mentioned in the list, use the blank spaces to write it down.
I use the grocery checklist a bit differently. Every Saturday, I prepare a meal plan for the week and then I check what we have on hand at home and fill the grocery checklist. More often, I delegate this task to my helper because I’m not a super mum, and I’d much rather spend this time with my son. Once my son goes for his mid-day nap, I use this precious time to order everything online.
Why edit your own grocery store list?
Grocery shopping is a personal and unique experience. No two shopping lists are the same. We follow mostly a healthy Mediterranean diet, but we also like pasta and lasagna! You might be vegetarian or follow a completely different diet like a low-carb or a low-fat one. Maybe you have dietary restrictions, and you don’t eat gluten? That’s why I included here an editable excel template of the grocery list. Use it as a foundation to develop your own master list. You can substitute, remove, and expand on this template to make it unique to you and to suit your needs.
Save yourself time and money, and avoid the stress by printing out our ultimate shopping list today or download the editable list and customize it to suit your needs. When you do, tell us how it goes! If you need the shopping list in Arabic, let me know and I can have it translated for you.
